I am all for technology.  In fact, I teach technology to lawyers.

But I have watched the technology of self-checkout by microchip mess up at least three folks just in the last year.

Major retailers do everything they can to encourage you to check out at the selfie-robot and it IS easy and tempting.  Still if you scan five items and the scanner beeps four times without your noticing, you have an excellent chance to get a free ride in a police car.

Here is my advice on self-checkout:

1.     The DEFAULT IS DON"T DO IT;

2.     The exceptions are:

     A.     When you have one large (as big as your head or larger) only'

     B.     When there is staff standing at the station to assist you

3.     When in doubt, refer back to Rule 1.


I am serious.  Even for very techy people, these things are legally dangerous.
